From Sunshine to Sweaters. Preparing for the Beauty of Shorter Days

September is here, and with it comes that magical shift between summer’s golden days and autumn’s cozy embrace. The shorter evenings, cooler air, and changing light can feel like a challenge for some, but they also hold a quiet beauty. In my latest blog, I talk about how to embrace the change of seasons with ease, warmth, and even a little humor, because shorter days don’t have to mean gloom. They can actually become your coziest, most soulful time of year!

September has a special kind of magic, doesn’t it?

It’s that in-between month where summer hasn’t completely packed up its suitcase,
but autumn is already knocking on the door with a basket of apples and a pile of crunchy leaves.
One minute you’re in sandals, the next you’re rummaging for your favorite scarf.

It’s the month of subtle shifts, cooler mornings, golden evenings, and the undeniable feeling that something is changing.
And while many people dread the shorter days and longer nights, September gives us the perfect chance to prepare ourselves, body and spirit, for the cozy months ahead.

The Beauty of Transition
September is nature’s way of easing us in. The days shorten gradually, giving us time to adapt.
The air turns sharper, meals become heartier, and the rhythm of life slows down just enough
to remind us we don’t need to sprint all year long.

Spiritually, September is a season of balance and reflection.
Summer was full of energy, outward living, and light. Autumn invites us inward.
It’s less about doing and more about being.
The shorter days are not a punishment but an invitation to rest, recharge, and reconnect.

Why Shorter Days Can Feel Tricky
Not everyone welcomes darker evenings with open arms. For some, the lack of light can feel heavy,
even affecting mood and energy levels.
There’s even a name for it, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
Even if you don’t experience that, you might feel more sluggish or unmotivated as the sun dips earlier.
And that’s okay, our bodies and minds are tuned to light.
But with a little preparation, the transition can feel smoother, even enjoyable.

How to Gently Prepare Yourself
Here’s the good news: September gives us time to ease into the darker season. A few small adjustments can make all the difference.

Adjust Your Routine Slowly
Instead of fighting the shorter days, start aligning with them. Go to bed a little earlier, dim the lights in the evening, and let your body gently find its new rhythm.

Light Up Your Space
Warm lighting, candles, fairy lights, bring the glow indoors. Darkness outside doesn’t mean you can’t create a cozy pocket of light at home.

Cozy Up Your Home
This is the season to pull out blankets, cushions, and your favorite mug. Make your space inviting, so when the evenings draw in, you look forward to being home.

Eat Seasonally
Listen to your cravings, autumn is about nourishing, grounding foods. Soups, stews, roasted vegetables… they not only warm your body but also feed your spirit.

Create Evening Rituals
Mark the shift from day to night with something intentional: light a candle, make tea, journal, or practice a short meditation. Rituals give rhythm and comfort to darker days.

Keep Moving
Even when you’re tempted to hibernate, keep your body active. Walks in the crisp air, gentle yoga, or even a silly dance in your living room can lift your energy.

Romanticize the Darkness
Instead of seeing long nights as depressing, reframe them. Imagine you’re living in a cozy novel, reading by firelight, sipping cocoa, reflecting on life. Who says ordinary evenings can’t feel magical?

The Clock Change
By the end of October, the clocks change, and suddenly 5 p.m. feels like midnight. It can be disorienting, but it doesn’t have to derail you.
See it as a reset. That “extra hour” can be used for something nourishing, sleep, self-care, or simply slowing down. Instead of resisting the change, treat it as a chance to recalibrate.

The Spiritual Side of Darkness
On a deeper level, shorter days aren’t about loss, they’re about balance.
Light is about growth and outward energy. Darkness is about rest and inner work. Spiritually, the darker months are fertile ground.
Seeds grow in the dark soil before sprouting in spring.
Our ideas, creativity, and dreams do the same.
Darkness is not empty, it’s full of possibilities.
By turning inward during autumn and winter, we reconnect with ourselves. Intuition sharpens. Creativity flows. Reflection deepens.

September is the doorway into this sacred season.

Why This Shift Matters
Here’s the thing: each season makes the next one sweeter. By the end of winter, we’re desperate for spring. By the end of summer, we’re excited for coziness, blankets, and fires. If we had only endless sunshine, we’d stop noticing its beauty. If we had only winter, we’d despair.
The balance, the cycle, is what keeps us alive and connected.
September teaches us that change isn’t something to dread, it’s what makes life rich and meaningful.

Wrapping It Up
September isn’t just back-to-school sales and pumpkin-spice overload.
It’s the month that gently guides us into a slower, cozier rhythm.
Instead of resisting the shorter days, we can prepare for them, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

So, light your candles, stir your soup, wrap yourself in blankets, and let the darker evenings remind you that rest, reflection, and stillness are just as sacred as sunshine.
September is not the end of summer, it’s the beginning of something softer, deeper,
and beautifully grounding. And when spring eventually rolls back, you’ll appreciate it all the more,
because you allowed yourself to savor autumn and winter first.

So, let’s welcome September with open arms.
I know I’ll be savoring every golden afternoon, I will be slipping happily into my first sweater of the season, and my smile will light up the room when the wood stove crackles to life for the very first time.

I hope your September will be cozy, relaxing, and full of little joys … and if you catch yourself secretly enjoying those earlier nights ... well ... consider that our shared little wink!
